Woman Finds Food and Comfort in Grimes County

"We didn't know it was going to hit that bad up here."

Bedias resident Regina Taeger arrived at the Iola Volunteer Fire Department visibly shaken.

"My husband is out of town and we didn't have any way to get food. It's embarrassing to have to come ask for it," a tearful Taeger explained.

Taeger hasn't eaten in three days and she's run out of her diabetes medicine.

"We've got no power, we've got no water and you don't know what's going on or what's where, what's even open to you," she said.

What is open is the Iola Volunteer Fire Department. Since Hurricane Ike hit, volunteers have been serving hot meals to those in need.

"It's not only the food, they're coming out for the support," said Iola Assistant Volunteer Fire Chief John Kochan.

Kochan helped organized the effort.

"The best thing we could offer as a department was organization and a place. Really, what you've got is the community, all the different organizations in the community and members of the community coming out and pitching in," said Kochan.

It's that spirit of giving that brings tears to Iola Mayor Christina Stover's eyes.

"I told her how the community comes together in times of need," Mayor Stover said. "There's not a place like this, you're not going to find a place like this."

But Regina Taeger did find it. And as she ate for the first time in days, tears flowed down her face.

For this neighbor in need, found the helping hand she was looking for.

"Relieved -- I don't feel like I'm so alone now," Taeger said.

Dinner will be served each night around 7 o'clock at the Iola Volunteer Fire Department to residents of Iola, Bedias, and Shiro.
