Tropical Storm Bonnie Could Be Just a Few Days Away

It's been less than a week since Hurricane Alex brought torrential rain and strong winds to parts of the lower Texas coast, but our second tropical storm of the season could already be forming in the Caribbean.

And it's in the same area that Alex began.

On July 4th, winds were observed near Tropical Storm strength, but as of Monday afternoon, the disturbance near the Yucatan Peninsula did not have a closed circulation. With low wind shear and warm Gulf waters, however, this disturbance could be only a few days away from becoming Tropical Storm Bonnie.

Scientists are predicting a busy year in the tropics. 14-23 named storms are forecast, with 8-14 of these becoming hurricanes.
