As of Monday, 8:20pm EDT The National Hurricane Center upgraded Cristobal to a Category 1 Hurricane.
During standard 8pm EDT update, hurricane hunters were flying through Cristobal as it was meandering in a general eastward direction. Initial reports were that maximum sustained winds had increased to near 70mph, with higher gusts. From that report, strengthening was expected to continue and hurricane status was expected later in the night or early Tuesday.
By 8:20 EDT, Hurricane Hunter reports were that a maximum sustained wind of 75mph was found, allowing an upgrade to Hurricane status.
Category 1 Hurricane must have a minimum sustained wind speed of 74mph.
Cristobal is expected to move north and then northeast over the next several days -- posing no threat to the United States Coastline.
