You may be enjoying just another warm, sunny, spring afternoon in the Brazos Valley when a Tornado Watch is issued. And in just a few hours , the sky turn dark and powerful storms begin to moving through the area, some of which, could produce one of the biggest forces of nature, a tornado. 800 tornadoes are reported every year across the country. About 130 of those are found right here in Texas, especially during the spring and summer months. And while improvements in technology and warnings have helped, at times a tornado can still develop suddenly and turn things upside down before you know what’s hit you.

When seconds count you'll want to be sure to have a safety plan. Find a hallway, closet or bathroom to take shelter in. Something away from outside wall and potential flying debris. When there, get down low and cover you head with blankets or pillows. You'll also want to have a safety kit ready with food, water and batteries in case damage does occur. Do these things and you'll have a greater chance of staying safe in the event of severe weather.

Just to give you a perspective, that average of 130 tornadoes a year, gives Texas the most out of any state. More tornadoes form in May, however, April's twisters are known to be the most violent.
