Thunderstorms develop all-year-long across the Brazos Valley, often bringing heavy rain, lots of cloud-to-ground lightning, hail, gusty winds, and even tornadoes from time-to-time.

A Severe Thunderstorm is a storm that consist of at least one of the following:

· Penny size hail (3/4 of an inch in diameter)

· Wind gusts of 58 mph or higher

· Funnel clouds or tornadoes

Any of the aforementioned conditions could potentially pose harm to your life or property, which is why understanding what to do in events of severe weather is very important.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch (or T-Storm Watch) means that conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Severe thunderstorm watches are usually issued in advance of an approaching storm system and could last for 6-8 hours.

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING (or T-STORM WARNING) means that a thunderstorm is approaching or currently in your area that is producing at least one of the following conditions:

· Penny size hail (3/4 of an inch in diameter)

· Wind gusts of 58 mph or higher

· Funnel clouds or tornadoes

These conditions may be detected by Doppler Radar or reported by the general public. When a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued for your area, you should take the necessary precautions and seek shelter from the storm until it passes.
