OVERVIEW

The best defense against severe weather is knowing exactly what to do and being prepared in the event bad weather strikes.

There are three things that everyone in Texas should always have since we live in tornado alley.

THE TOP 3

NOAA Weather Radio
During severe weather, significant weather bulletins are automatically broadcast through the NOAA Weather Radio network. Simple weather radios can be purchased for around $20 while more sophisticated weather radios can be bought for more. This radio is one of the most important items to have, as it can provide continuous information during severe weather in the event that you loose power or can't see or hear a television.

News 3 County Map
Know what county you live in! A lot of advisories are issued for counties which is why it's important to make sure you know what county you live in and the surrounding counties. A News 3 county map will be available soon.

Tornado PlanThe steps you should take during a tornado can vary significantly from location to location. The best place to take shelter in your home may not be the best place at a friend's house.

Create a tornado plan for your home or business and make sure everyone involved routinely participates in drills. Make sure that you and others know exactly where to go and what to do, without hesitation, if a tornado strikes.

OTHER ITEMS

Other items can also come in handy in the event you loose electricity, are caught in a flood, or find yourself in any irregular situation due to bad weather. A lot of us already have these items around the house or can at least find them at a local grocery store.

A Flashlight
You never know when you'll have to do without lights! Make sure you always have a flashlight handy in the event that you loose electricity.

First Aid Kit

Canned Food/Can Opener
In the event of a significant flood or during prolonged periods without electricity, your typical meal may be just a little harder to prepare. Make sure you always have non-parishable, canned food items for every member of your family in the event of a significant weather event.

Bottled Water
During significant floods, the water supply in your community may become contaminated. It's very important that you make sure and have plenty of bottled water ready for every member of your family in the event of a significant flood.

Rubber Boots/Gloves

Batteries

A Battery Powered Radio/TV
In the event of an actual tornado touchdown, the last place you really want to be is in front of your TV set. After you've received word of a tornado warning for your community, you should turn to a portable, battery powered radio or television in order to take your necessary precautions while still being able to get significant weather bulletins.
