When a Watch is Issued:
Watches may be issued hours in advance before thunderstorms even begin to move through the Brazos Valley. The sky may be sunny when you first hear of a tornado or severe thunderstorm watch. Remember, a watch just means that conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms and / or tornadoes.
What Should You do to Prepare:
1) Make sure you weather radio is turned on (if you have one)--
--Ensure that your radio is set to the correct frequency along with the weather alert function turned on.
--Check to make sure the batteries are in working condition in case of the event of a power outage.
--The radio will alert you if a warning is issued, so it is vital to have it on and working correctly.
2) Consider Turning on a TV and / or AM/FM radio--
--If you don’t own a weather radio, consider turning on KBTX or a radio if you will be away from home. When threatening weather occurs, we’ll be on-air and online as needed, to ensure that you and your family stay safe.
What Should You Do When a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is Issued:
Do not ignore severe thunderstorm warnings! Severe thunderstorm warnings can often precede tornado warnings, providing you extra time to prepare for a potentially dangerous storms. If there is a severe thunderstorm headed your way, you should monitor it closely, especially if a tornado watch is in effect.
1) Move indoors and away from windows:
--Severe thunderstorms can produce large hail and damaging straight-line winds. It is important to move into a sturdy structure and away from windows that potentially could break out.
2) Monitor weather updates as they happen:
--Severe thunderstorms can and do produce tornadoes. Stay tuned to KBTX, as being aware of what is happening around you is very important.
What Should You Do When a Tornado Warning is Issued:
1) Use you pre-planned tornado safety precautions:
--Before severe weather strikes, make sure to make a plan with your family that details where to go in case a tornado warning is issued for your neighborhood. In your tornado safe location, be sure to already have stored a Tornado Safety Kit, so that it is near by in case the worst occurs.
2) Get In, Get Down and Cover Up!
--If you are outside, get inside. If you are already inside, get underground if possible, however if not, get as far into the middle of the building as possible. Flying and falling debris are a storm’s number one threat. Use pillows, blankets, coats, etc to cover up and protect your head and body from flying debris.
3) You should absolutely never do the following:
--Never seek shelter under a highway overpass.
--Do not open windows and / or doors. This will only make you more prone to damage.
--Never run outside to try to find the tornado, even if the tornado appears to be some distance away and not moving in your direction as tornadoes are unpredictable.
--If you are under a tornado warning, you are in danger of being struck by a tornado and the last place you want to be is outside.
