As storms move through the Brazos Valley, it is important to be sure you have a safety plan for you and your family in the event of severe weather.
There are three things that you should have prepared in case of such events:
1) Tornado Plan--
--The steps you take during a tornado can vary significantly from location to location. The best place for your neighbors to take shelter in their home, may not be the same as your house. With your family, decide where in your house everyone will meet to stay safe that is away from windows and more importantly anything that could become flying debris. If your house has an underground basement or storm cellar, that is the absolute best and safest place you can be.
--Once your tornado plan is made, make sure everyone involved routinely participates in drills. Make sure that you and others know exactly where to go and what to do, without hesitation, if a tornado strikes.
2) NOAA Weather Radio--
--During severe weather, significant weather bulletins are automatically broadcast through the NOAA Weather Radio network. Simple weather radios can be purchased for around $20 while more sophisticated weather radios can be bought for more. This radio is one of the most important items to have, as it can provide continuous information during severe weather in the event that you lose power or cannot see or hear a television.
3) News 3 County Map--
--It is important to know which county you live in. Advisories are issued by county name, which is why you should know in which part of the county you live in as well. Also, as storms move through the area, be sure to know the counties that surround yours, so that you’ll be able to monitor storms as they move closer to your neighborhood.
Be Sure to Assemble a Tornado Safety Kit Containing:
--First aid kit
--2 weeks supply of medications you may take on a regular basis
--Battery powered radio, flashlight and extra batteries.
--Ample Bottled water
--Ample dry and canned food and a can opener
--Sturdy shoes and work gloves
--Written instructions on how to turn off your home’s utilities
--Any other essentials that could be needed in case the worst occurs
Anything you can do to prepare for a severe storm can help. It is never too early to start thinking about safety precautions, because it could be just a matter of minutes for disaster to strike, especially during severe weather season.
