Huntsville, Texas (KBTX) - A long awaited project in Walker County is getting one step closer to completion. Work is still going on to widen a large stretch of I-45. A portion of the project will be completed in a few months.

The segment nearing completion is almost seven miles long. It’s part of a $670 million interstate expansion project in Walker County.

TxDOT said Monday COVID-19 has not delayed the schedule. Drivers passing through there were pleased to see the progress.

”About time, it’s good because driving it for the last 8 years is kind of, it can be a headache sometimes. Especially if its raining, you’ve got the two lanes. When the construction started it was a pain. We try to do our trips on Monday or Thursday when traffic is not that heavy,” said Wanda Williams of Cypress. She had stopped at the Sam Houston Statue Visitors Center on a trip to town.

”We’re super excited about the expansion of I-45. It’s a classic example of how our city is growing, how our county is growing and we’re going to need that expansion to handle the traffic through Huntsville. We’re excited about the progress being made so far,” said Mayor Andy Brauninger of Huntsville.

One of the southern segments should be finished this fall. The entire project won’t be finished until 2025.
