BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - Brazos County officials said they are planning to open a public vaccination site for registered 1A & 1B patients at the Brazos Center next week.

Brazos county leaders and health officials made the announcement Wednesday as they discussed local COVID-19 vaccine distribution. Currently, only people in categories 1A and 1B of the state’s distribution plan qualify to receive the vaccine.

“We’ve identified a location. We’ve identified staffing. We have an overhead team in place and we’re hopeful that we can do a dry run as early as next Monday,” said Brazos County vaccination coordinator Jim Stewart. “We’re moving forward and I believe we’re moving forward rapidly.”

Stewart was chosen last week to head the local COVID-19 vaccination administration plan for Brazos County. Stewart served as Chief Deputy at the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office prior to his retirement in December.

Current plans would have the Brazos Center, referred to as “The Hub” in the press conference, offer mass vaccinations for eligible, registered Brazos County residents. The site would first utilize the patient flow from the St. Joseph Health system.

Stewart said Brazos County Judge Duane Peters has reserved the Brazos Center for the next three months, Monday-Friday, for vaccinations.

“I’m hopeful that Monday we will start processing folks through there using the medical resources of St. Joseph’s, the overhead resources of TEEX, and our local responders,” said Stewart.

Monday will be only a trial run of the county’s new system, intended for those that are already signed up to get the vaccine through St. Joseph. The Brazos Center is in no way affiliated with the administration of the COVID-19 vaccines and county staff says they are unable to answer any questions.

Those interested in registering for a COVID-19 vaccine that are eligible under Phases 1A and 1B can sign up with St. Joseph Health, Baylor Scott & White, or H-E-B.
