Gittens, Mu Named to Mid-Outdoor Bowerman Watch List
NEW ORLEANS – Texas A&M’s track & field’s Tyra Gittens and Athing Mu have been named to the Mid-Outdoor Bowerman Watch List, the organization announced Wednesday.
The Bowerman is given annually by the USTFCCCA to the nation’s top male and female collegiate athletes.
Since being named to the initial docket on February 10, the dynamic duo has yet moved off the watch list.
Gittens has started her first half of the outdoor season with a bang. Most recently, she won the Texas A&M Team Invitational heptathlon with an Aggie school record score of 6,274 points. She bettered her previous school record by 200 points. The performance made her the seventh best performer in collegiate history and is currently an NCAA-leading mark.
Prior to her heptathlon showing, Gittens won the Texas A&M vs. Texas Dual Meet high jump competition with an NCAA-leading clearance of 6-2.75 (1.90m). The mark moved her to No. 2 on the Aggie outdoor performer list, only behind Melinda Clark’s school record jump of 6-3.5 (1.92m), which was set in 1989.
Mu, has anchored the Aggies to a perfect 3-0 in 4x400m relays so far this outdoor season. She set a Texas A&M school record clocking 4:16.06 in the 1,500m at the Texas A&M vs. Texas Dual Meet. Most recently, Mu helped the Aggies win the Texas A&M Team Invitational at 3:26.73. The time ranks the quartet of Tierra Robinson-Jones, Syaira Richardson, Charokee Young and Mu as the fourth fastest in Texas A&M history and the fastest in a non-championship meet.
The Aggies make the short trip to Waco to compete in the Michael Johnson Invitational beginning Friday, April 16-17 at the Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium.
