COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - The Texas State 7-on-7 football tournament begins this weekend at Veterans Park in College Station. The A&M Consolidated Tigers are the defending state champs from 2019. Four players from that squad are now coaching this year’s team.

One of those coaches is Gage Pahl, who led the Tigers to the 2019 7-on-7 state championship at quarterback. Now he’ll try to lead Consol to a second consecutive championship, but this time from the sidelines.

“It’s been a lot of fun for me especially to be back around the game and be back with most of my friends that I’ve played with previously,” said Pahl. “I get to coach alongside them and help and mentor these young guys and get them ready for this fall. It’s been a whole lot of fun. I’ve just been enjoying every moment of it,” Pahl added.

The players on this year’s Consol team realize how much of a benefit it is to be coached by former championship players.

“They know what they’re doing,” Junior receiver Wesley Greaves said. “They know offenses. They know the defenses. They know what stops certain plays and how to beat certain defenses because they’ve been through it all. They’ve played in the championship and they’ve won,” Greaves added.

“I’m already friends with them, so it’s definitely a lot of fun and I can learn from them pretty easily,” explained Senior quarterback Brodie Daniel. “I respect them. I’ve learned a lot from them,” Daniel added.

Pahl admitted it’s a lot different coaching from the sidelines than playing the game.

“It’s hard to stand on the sideline when you can’t go out there and do anything about what I’m trying to tell them,” Pahl said. “They can only do as good as I tell them, I can’t do it myself, so that’s been the hardest part by far,” Pahl added.

The Tigers have high expectations and want to continue the legacy set before them.

“We’re just trying to go back to back. Continue the undefeated season like the guys two years ago had,” Freshman quarterback Will Hargett said.

“We didn’t come here to lose, we came here to take the championship and win,” Greaves exclaimed.

“The rewarding part by far is seeing how much we’ve grown and gotten better and how much they’ve gelled as a team,” explained Pahl. “I’ve seen a lot of people step up as leaders and get them in a better position for this fall. It’s just been an honor to give back to the coaches at Consol and kind of help them with these guys getting them ready for this fall,” Pahl finished.

A&M Consolidated will start the 7-on-7 tournament this Friday beginning at 1:45 p.m. The Tigers will play in a pool with Denton Guyer, Klein Cain, and Midland Christian.
