BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - The newest Texas A&M Director of Athletics was introduced on Monday at the Hall of Champions at Kyle Field.

Alberts didn’t seem to be on many peoples’ radars when thinking about the new Texas A&M athletic director. But his leadership and vision for the future seem to stand out. It also helps that he’s a former All-American linebacker and Butkus Award winner.

“Don’t kid yourself. Down deep Trev Alberts is still an All-American linebacker,” Texas A&M President Mark Welsh exclaimed at the introductory press conference. “I’d suspect he’d love starting most days by meeting somebody in the ‘A’ gap. I’m just hoping that’s never me,” Welsh joked.

When Alberts was introduced it was apparent: he’s competitive and wants to earn the right to be a leader in Aggieland. He recently signed a contract extension so it had to be a difficult decision to leave his Alma Mater, Nebraska, and put on the Maroon jacket.

“Very challenging, emotional, and difficult,” Alberts said on his decision to leave Nebraska for A&M. “But at 54 years old you see opportunities. Texas A&M is a pretty remarkable place with a remarkable trajectory with remarkable leadership,” Alberts added.

“Surprised isn’t the right word for me,” Welsh chimed in on Alberts being an available candidate. “I was excited that he was interested. One of the things we found out throughout this search is that the job is really attractive to a whole lot of people,” Welsh added.

Alberts credited the great hires that have already been made at A&M with a lot of winning coaches in place. Alberts also said he was happy at Nebraska, but this opportunity seemed too great to pass up.

“There isn’t any scenario that I can think of or imagine where this place doesn’t have the opportunity with alignment in leadership, hardwork and focus, and a little discipline and accountability that they can’t be a leader,” Alberts said. “Not every institution can say that. I want to be very careful. I’m not saying that Nebraska isn’t that either. The commitment of our trustees, our donors, the fanbase, and the trajectory of the institution with leadership, there’s no excuse,” Alberts concluded.

Trev Alberts is Texas A&M’s fifth athletic director since 2012.
