College Station and Consol excited during first week of football practice

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - The high school football season is almost here in the Brazos Valley with Class 5A and 6A practices underway this week.

Both College Station and A&M Consolidated had early morning practices that started on Monday. On Wednesday the two programs started practicing with shoulder pads, and full contact will be allowed by the UIL starting Saturday.

The Cougars and Tigers are coming off deep playoff runs last year and are excited to get back after it.

“It’s fantastic,” exclaimed College Station head football coach Stoney Pryor. “We get to do a lot now in the summer. We get 7-on-7 time. We get to actually practice football. But to come back and put helmets on and today we got shoulder pads on, that just adds a new element to the excitement of starting a season,” Pryor added.

“We threw a lot at the younger guys and everybody the very first day,” College Station senior quarterback Cade Corcoran explained. “Just threw them in there to see what they can do. They all did way better than we expected. It was very good to see that confidence,” Corcoran added.

“It’s great to have all of our kids back up here,” A&M Consolidated head football coach Brandon Schmidt said. “We’re about 225 strong in the program. Having them all up here in the morning at 6 am getting to work, trying to get better, trying to achieve our goals,” Schmidt added.

“It feels great coming out with the boys,” Consol senior defensive lineman Vakapuna Foketi said. “After a long summer, we’ve all been waiting to put on the pads and start hitting,” Foketi added.

“I feel like everybody brought pretty good energy out the gate,” said Consol senior safety Cannon Kieschnick. “Everybody was flying around the field and everybody’s glad to be here,” Foketi added.

The High School football season kicks off on August 30th. College Station and Consol play each other on September 20th.
