BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) -Being warm in the winter doesn’t have to mean looking frumpy!

Style expert and color analyst Jordan Morchat said there are some basic rules to keep in mind when it comes to layering for the cold.

“We always want to start with a foundation, so typically this is going to be a great top with some denim or some pants,” Morchat explained.

She recommends layering from thinnest to thickest, or lightest to heaviest.

A good base to start with is a long sleeve turtle neck shirt.

Morchat said she also loves playing with different textures and colors when layering.

She showed how pairing jeans with a nice blazer brings an outfit to life.

“As we’re kind of thinking about building an outfit that in that end result we’re going to walk out the door, we kind of need to start to think about micro outfits,” Morchat said.

She explained a micro outfit is the outfit within all the layers.

“If you’re going to take off a layer, are you going to feel exposed?” Morchat added.

Making sure your outfit still feels complete when you remove some layers indoors is important.

For warmth outdoors, Morchat said it can be fun to add an extra sweater or colorful scarf as a pop of color.

“If you’re doing monochrome with layers, you want to think about fabrics and textures,” Morchat said.

She said an outfit with visual dimension will always look more interesting.
