What is seasonal depression? A psychologist explains the signs to spot
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) -As the seasons change, so can our mental health.
Seasonal Affective Disorder, or seasonal depression, is a type of depression that occurs during certain times of the year, usually starting in the fall and lasting through winter.
It has to do with less sunlight and colder weather, making it harder to spend time outside doing the activities we enjoy.
This time of year can lead to lower energy because we’re spending more time indoors, which can cause us to spiral into sadness and depression.
Psychologist Dr. Mary Ann Covey with Thriveworks explains the signs to look for.
“You’re more tired, you’re just more lethargic, things aren’t as exciting as they were, you have trouble getting out of bed,” said Dr. Covey.
She said the end of the holiday season can also impact our mental health negatively and early January can feel like a downer for some individuals.
Dr. Covey said when we’re feeling blue, the best thing to do is socialize with the people we care about, and find time to soak up some sunshine.
She recommends taking a walk outside when the weather allows it.
She said if you’re experiencing seasonal depression, or just the winter blues, try creating realistic goals for the year instead of unattainable ones which may cause you to feel worse.
Dr. Covey said it may be time to seek professional help if making these mindful changes aren’t helping over time.
She said it’s important to have somebody to talk to who can suggest more ways to help you move forward and also offer another perspective.
