Caldwell honors long time softball coach by renaming field
CALDWELL, Texas (KBTX) - In this day and age it’s hard to find coaches who stay at one place for very long.
Caldwell High School honored long time softball coach Wendy Weiss who gave nearly three decades to the Hornets.
Weiss started as the head coach for the Hornet softball team in 1995 and retired last year after 29 seasons.
“We came from not knowing where right field was to making state runs and just having an amazing softball program,” Weiss said.
Before the 2025 softball season gets underway, Caldwell ISD is returning the favor.
They’re honoring the long time coach by renaming the softball field to Weiss Field.
“It’s really hard to wrap my head around that this is happening,” Weiss said. “It’s an honor and it’s also humbling at the same time because this place has blessed me.”
“She’s given back and that’s all shes done her entire life, and it’s just a testament to her as a person and this town and how they’ve embraced her,” Sean Witherwax, Caldwell’s Athletic Director said. “We’re excited we can give something back to her because she’s given so much to us.”
Past and current players plus friends and family were by Weiss' side at the ceremony Saturday morning. Her mother was also in attendance and she turned 93 this past Wednesday.
“She’s seen it come a long way and has always been a great support,” Weiss said.
Weiss racked up 435 wins in the Hornet orange, made the playoffs over a dozen times and finished in the state semifinals in 2004.
When she first started she had to drive the team to a downtown field to play since there wasn’t a field at the school. Fast forward 30 years and her name is officially part of Hornet history.
“If I’m coaching from the stands or coaching in the dugout it doesn’t really matter, I’ll always be a Lady Hornet,” Weiss said.
Caldwell opens the season on February 4 when they host Rudder.
