BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas announced Sunday that he will not seek reelection, ending more than two decades in Congress.

McCaul, a Republican who represents District 10, which stretches from Austin to Houston and includes parts of the Brazos Valley, made the announcement during an appearance on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos and in a statement posted to Facebook.

“It has been the honor of a lifetime to represent the people of central Texas and to chair the prestigious Homeland Security and Foreign Affairs Committees. My father’s service in World War II inspired me to pursue a life of public service, with a focus on defending our great nation against global threats, and I have been proud to carry out that mission in Congress for more than two decades,” he wrote.

McCaul, first elected in 2004, is the past chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and previously led the House Homeland Security Committee. He has served 11 terms and said he plans to serve out the remainder of his term and hinted at his future plans.

“I am ready for a new challenge in 2027 and look forward to continuing to serve my country in the national security and foreign policy realm. I couldn’t be more grateful to the people of Texas for trusting me to represent them, and I will continue to serve them to the best of my ability for the remainder of this Congress,” he wrote.

“I want to continue to serve the people of this country in national security and foreign policy and do what I’ve done the last two decades and make America stronger and the world safer,” he added.
