Adidas basketball tournament to draw over 3,000 visitors to Bryan-College Station
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - As college students head home for the summer, Bryan-College Station is filling back up, this time with basketball.
“As far as visitors go, we expected about 3,100 per day across 5 days. So that’s Wednesday through Sunday,” said Jay Leal, the Sports Sales Coordinator for Destination Bryan.
The Adidas Three Stripes Select Boys Basketball tournament is in its fourth year at the Legends Event Center.
120 teams are competing — and the event is so large, nearby schools are stepping in to help.
“We’ve been using some of their middle schools and their high schools for those overflow teams and overflow games that events this size kind of need,” said Leal. “Legends is not able to contain things that are this big, so it’s pretty cool to see things like that expand and actually give back to the community and Bryan ISD as well.”
The tournament is one of the most heavily scouted events of the summer — drawing college recruiters alongside players and coaches from across the nation.
Legends Event Center General Manager Jamie Cox says the Adidas name has helped put Bryan-College Station on the national radar.
“Having a brand like Adidas that’s not just national, it’s an international brand, ” said Cox. “The second Adidas came and hosted their first event, they helped put Bryan and Legends Event Center on the map.”
For local businesses, the timing could not be better. Local leaders estimate the tournament will generate roughly three million dollars in tourism revenue this weekend.
“Especially since a lot of the students leave town. So, those businesses aren’t getting hit as hard as they do during the semesters, during the school year with all these people coming in, especially in the month of July. We get to see a lot of those businesses still keep up,” said Leal.
The event continues Saturday with doors opening at 8 a.m., and 7:10 a.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $25 for the day or $70 for the weekend.
