SEC Preview: Texas A&M at Oklahoma

(KBTX) - One of Texas A&M’s opponents this football season is an old and once-familiar foe: the Oklahoma Sooners.

When the Aggies travel to Norman in the penultimate week of the regular season, it will mark the first time the two programs have shared a field since Texas A&M’s iconic 41-13 victory in the 2013 Cotton Bowl, spearheaded by the reigning Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel.

The Sooners represent one of the toughest hurdles on A&M’s schedule. Oklahoma is coming off an impressive 10-3 campaign that culminated in a trip to the College Football Playoff. Boasting one of the nation’s premier defenses last year, the Sooners also return experience at the game’s most critical position with quarterback John Mateer leading the offense.

Coaching Connections and High Praise

The matchup features fascinating coaching storylines. Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables is highly familiar with Texas A&M offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins. The two went head-to-head frequently during the legendary Clemson-Alabama national championship rivalry, when Venables was a defensive coordinator for the Tigers.

Venables expressed deep respect for the Aggies’ coaching staff under Mike Elko, particularly highlighting Wiggins.

“He knows how to win. Coach Elko is not going to hire any duds,” Venables said. “And so he’ll do a great job. Collin [Klein] did a wonderful job of establishing who they want to be identity-wise and tough and physical, create explosive plays in both the run and the pass game, the plus-one run game. I think they understand what playing complementary football looks like and going to be a great, great challenge.”

Players Preparing for a Physical Battle

Oklahoma offensive lineman Eddy Pierre-Louis, who was recruited by Texas A&M during his high school career, is eager to face the Aggies.

“I’m actually excited to play a team like that,” Pierre-Louis said. “They’re a great team. They got good players. I was fortunate enough to visit the school as well. It was a great school. I feel like they’re good with everything, good coaching staff. But I’m very excited to play that team for sure. They got good players. We got good players. Just ready to play ball.”

On the other side of the ball, Sooners defensive lineman Taylor Wein echoed the sentiment, stressing that the Sooners must be prepared for a physical four-quarter fight against Elko’s squad.

“They play very, very complementary football, all three phases,” Wein said. “They show up ready to go. And so especially a big organization and program like that, you have to come correct and you got to be ready to play. They’re going to come out swinging. And so we got to show up and just be ready to go.”

Wein also acknowledged the threat posed by the Aggies’ offensive weapons. “We know that they do a good job offensively. And their quarterback is really, really talented. And so we just got to show up and be ready to perform.”

A Crucial Late-Season Window

The timing of the matchup couldn’t be more critical for Texas A&M’s postseason aspirations. The Aggies will travel to Norman for this physical battle just one week before returning home to host the highly anticipated Lone Star Showdown against rival Texas on November 21st.
