Yancy wins College Station mayoral race after Cunha concedes
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - Bob Yancy was elected mayor of College Station on Tuesday night after opponent Elizabeth Cunha conceded the race.
Yancy, a two-term former city councilman, secured 18,365 votes to Cunha’s 12,691.
“It’s incredible,” Yancy said in a live interview with KBTX on election night. “My family and I live the College Station dream. We want to help ensure that for future generations, retirees, everybody all of our citizens.”
In an exclusive interview with KBTX last month, Yancy noted that rising housing costs and ongoing growth make it increasingly difficult for younger generations to thrive, calling growth a “two-sided coin” that brings traffic and housing challenges alongside job creation and economic benefits.
“On an extraordinary night in political results, our message resonated, and I’m very proud of that,” Yancy said.
Following her concession, Cunha expressed admiration and respect for Yancy in an interview with KBTX, sentiments Yancy returned by calling Cunha a “class act” and praising her dedication to the community.
“To Elizabeth Cunha, what a class act she is,” Yancy said. “To the folks that turned out and supported me. I’m just very, very appreciative, and now it’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work.”
Yancy will be sworn in as mayor on Nov. 16, succeeding John Nichols, who served four years and did not seek re-election.
