Job Description

KBTX is looking for a motivated investigative reporter to join our award-winning news team.

In this position, you’ll develop both long and short term investigations, with a focus on uncovering the human story behind each story.

The ideal candidate should be well versed in public information laws nationally and in Texas, comfortable working with data, and have a natural urge to dig deeper. You must be independently enterprise content and use your storytelling skills to offer meaningful context to issues affecting the Brazos Valley.

In 2018, KBTX was honored as the Texas AP Broadcasters/Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas Station of the Year for our investigative work. You’re joining a team of exceptional journalists that are committed to our community and work to make it better, both on and off camera.

Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited, to:

• Work with news director and investigative team to develop responsible, thoughtful investigative journalism.
• Develop a regular, multi-dimensional investigative presence in KBTX newscasts and digital platforms
• Meet daily and weekly deadlines in a fast-paced environment, including a strong digital plan tailored to your assignment and long-term projects.
• Create and facilitate strong working relationships with trusted sources and community leaders.
• Develop franchise content, which may require travel and time outside of a standard workday.

Candidates should also exhibit a good work ethic, strong people skills, the ability to be a team player and work flexibly. This position may require holiday work.

Two years of experience in a TV newsroom, as well as a college degree in broadcast journalism or a related field are expected. Experience in reviewing legal/court documents, FOIA/TPIA and submitting open records requests to obtain information is a must. A strong candidate will have experience with data journalism, know their way around a courthouse, and have an established and responsible presence on digital platforms, including station website, social media and OTT. Experience with ENPS or Sony XPRI non-linear editing software is a big plus.
