Meals on Wheels delivers Food Bank senior bags to those in need

BRYAN, Tex. (KBTX) - Seniors across the Brazos Valley are being fed seven days a week, thanks to Meals on Wheels and their partnership with the Brazos Valley Food Bank.

For Volunteer Coordinator Amanda Kelughan, Meals on Wheels is more than just a job.

"You can never have a bad day! Seriously!" said Amanda. "I just feel comfortable around seniors and learning from them.

Since 2003, Amanda has spent her weeks dropping off hot meals to seniors across the Brazos Valley.

"You go up to your first house and to hand them a warm meal and a smile, its just wonderful," said Kelughan.

"That may be their only contact with someone," said Meals on Wheels Director Bill Ray.

He added, the hot lunches they serve Monday through Friday go beyond just nutrition.

"Not only are they getting the meal, we make sure they're okay, so their family knows they're okay," said Ray.

That care can continue seven days a week, thanks to the Brazos Valley Food Bank and their Senior Outreach Program.

"We use their senior bags to help supplement each of these peoples diets," said Ray. "These canned goods help to get them through the weekend."

Complete with veggies, fruit, grains and some protein, the Food Bank's Senior Outreach Program provides the essentials.

"The ideas behind these items is they're easy to prepare and easy to access," said Programs Manager Shannon Avila. "So that way a senior who does have mobility issues, doesn't have another challenge trying to access the food."

Meals on wheels serves more than 500 seniors across the Brazos Valley.

The Food Bank supplies Meals on Wheels with about 200 senior bags every other week
