BRYAN, Tex. (KBTX) A group of former educators took the Bryan school district by storm Monday, delivering more than a thousand dictionaries to 3rd grade students.

The Dictionary Project is working with Bryan ISD to get the student dictionaries to kids over a two day period.

The Brazos County Republicans and Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush handed out dictionaries to the children.

Organizers say it's a way to get kids thinking about the importance of reading and increase the value of their education.

"We get lost in numbers. We get lost in big issues in Austin, but really today is a reminder why we do this," said Bush. "It's about public service and making sure that the next generation of Texans is prepared for the challenges of tomorrow."

In all, 1,500 dictionaries were given to third graders at the 14 Bryan elementary schools and five private schools.

More than $5,000 was raised from donors to purchase the books.
