Brazos County Commissioners issued a proclamation Tuesday declaring April "Confederate History and Heritage Month."

County Judge Duane Peters tells KBTX it's important to acknowledge the events of the Civil War and the connections many families in Brazos County have to it.

"We've been doing this for several years now and each year we approach this with sensitivity and caution," said Judge Peters. "We've made sure there is language in the proclamation that acknowledges and condemns slavery."

All commissioners voted in favor of the proclamation.

Precinct 4's Irma Cauley, who is the only black county commissioner, was absent during Tuesday's meeting but supports the measure.

"Commissioner Cauley has been very helpful and supportive in making sure we do this the right way and use the correct language," said Judge Peters.
