UPDATE: County leader responds to sudden resignation of sheriff

CALDWELL, Tex. (KBTX) - Tuesday morning Burleson County Commissioners accepted Sheriff Thomas Norsworthy's resignation. It is effective immediately.

"Thomas has spent most of his career serving in some form or fashion in law enforcement in Burleson County so it was a shock," said Burleson County Judge Keith Schroeder.

The judge tells KBTX the sheriff is resigning for personal reasons.

"As his letter of resignation states, he's leaving for personal reasons. He's had some personal matters and issues that have come up, so he thought it was best for the county and for the sheriff's department for him step down," Schroeder said.

Judge Schroeder said the former sheriff submitted his resignation last week but it was accepted Tuesday morning when commissioners could all meet.

"The county is disappointed about him resigning and we also wish him well in the future and appreciate his service in the past," Schroeder said.

Norsworthy previously served as Police Chief in Caldwell as well as an investigator for the Burleson County District Attorney.

The judge said the county is working to fill the position as soon as possible. They plan on conducting interviews on Thursday morning and hope to have someone sworn in by Friday.

Anyone interested in the open position is asked to contact the county's HR department by 5:00 p.m. Wednesday.
