WHITNEY, Tex. (KBTX)- A 28-year-old Whitney man was killed by a single shotgun blast to the chest during an argument about money with a 73-year-old friend, whom witnesses subdued and held down until deputies arrived, the Hill County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

Anthony Dewayne Johnson, Jr. died at the scene of the shooting, which was reported just after 1 p.m. Thursday off FM 2604 in Whitney.

When deputies arrived, witnesses were holding the suspect down in the front yard of Johnson’s home.

He was identified Friday as Elvin Dewayne Gage of Whitney.

Deputies found Johnson dead inside the home.

Gage was taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries he received when the witnesses detained him.

He remained in the Hill County Jail Friday, charged with murder.

Witnesses told deputies that the suspect arrived at Johnson’s house “armed with a shotgun to get money from the victim that he supposedly owned him,” Sheriff Rodney B. Watson said in a press release Friday.

“During a conversation between the suspect and the victim, the suspect fired a single shot striking the victim in the chest,” he said.
