Chrissy's Closest received a big donation Friday morning thanks to the efforts of Pecan Trail Intermediate School students.
The student council, gifted and talented students and the runners club raised $4,500 and over 200 pairs of socks. The Brazos Running Company also donated 150 pairs of shoes.
"Today was about us giving back to the community, believing in kids and teaching them at an early age what it's like to make an impact in someones lives," said coach David Childers. "You don't have to wait to be an adult. You can start at an early age."
Chrissy Hester, who runs the closet, said it was neat to hear the students talking about the closet and seeing that they can make a difference in the community at such a young age. Hester was Childers' counselor back when he was in high school in College Station.
"She is one of those people that truly went out of her way and believed in every kid there," said Childers. "For me, to be able to do this and to learn from her what it means to give back to people and hopefully inspire people to do the same. It's about giving to other people and not what you get."
Hester thinks what Childers has done by getting his clubs involved in doing these things is a valuable lesson. Chrissy's Closet is located at College View High School and is open every Monday from 4 to 6 pm.
