COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX)- The City of College Station kicked off their Texas Weekend of Remembrance celebration at Veterans Park Saturday.
The free event put on by College Station Parks and Recreation says they expect thousands over the three-day weekend as they celebrate Memorial Day.
A U.S. Army Blackhawk was on display for kids to play in, and as U.S. Army Sergeant Wayne Tack watched, he couldn’t help but think about how events like help remind the community the true meaning of the holiday.
“I love doing this kind of stuff with the kids and the adults and telling them about what I do and how it affects them,” says Sgt. Tack.
Sgt. Tack joined the U.S. Army 29 years ago. He says he has traveled all over the world defending this country.
Now, he likes to teach kids that Memorial Day is more than just a day off.
"It’s important to remember these people because they gave their lives, the ultimate sacrifice for this country. I’ve written a check, a blank check, for this country. And if it’s my turn to go I would happily cash that check for this country,” says Sgt. Tack.
The Texas Weekend of Remembrance event continues Sunday with A kids run, a 5-K, and free celebratory breakfast.
