School and road closures, parking & viewing information for Thursday

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX)- George H.W. Bush, 41st President of the United States, will be laid to rest Thursday, Dec. 6 at Texas A&M University on the grounds of the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library Center.

Thursday's Arrival in College Station

The Union Pacific train carrying President Bush from Houston to College Station is scheduled to arrive on Thursday at about 3:45 p.m.

An arrival ceremony — for family and invited guests only — will take place on the west side of the railroad tracks, across from the Texas A&M Hotel & Conference Center.

The procession from the train to the Bush Library and Museum grounds will not be open to the public.

The graveside will be open to the public beginning Saturday, Dec. 8.

Where To Watch In College Station

There are three locations where viewing will be safe and ideal, and the College Station Police Department recommends you arrive at one of these locations as far ahead of the train’s estimated 3:45 p.m. arrival as possible:

Spectators are urged to stand on the east side of Wellborn Road (behind perimeter fencing) either in front of the Kyle Field parking lot (Lot 62) or between that location and George Bush Drive.

The third viewing location is along the south side (behind perimeter fencing) of George Bush Drive, between Wellborn Road and Penberthy Boulevard.

Those electing to view the train arrival outside these designated, safe locations are instructed to do so only from the east side of Wellborn Road. Do not attempt to cross to the west side of Wellborn Road.

The train will pass between 3:30 p.m. and 3:40 p.m.

College Station Road Closures

Per orders from the United States Secret Service, the following roadways will be blocked to vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic beginning at midnight on Thursday, Dec. 6:

Wellborn Road, from University Drive to George Bush Drive.

George Bush Drive, from Wellborn Road to Harvey Mitchell Parkway (FM 2818).

All streets leading to West Campus.

Spectator Parking

Texas A&M University Transportation Services is allowing free event parking at six campus locations, including the University Center Garage across from Rudder Tower.

All free parking areas are indicated in dark blue on this Transportation Services map.

Spectators are strongly discouraged from parking illegally in any neighborhood and from blocking any roadway. The College Station Police Department will take all necessary steps to ensure neighborhood streets have adequate emergency vehicle access and safe conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.

Navasota Road Closures

The City of Navasota has announced North Railroad St. from East Dickson to Stoneham St. and South Railroad St. from Washington St. to Johnson St. will be closed to vehicles from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

These areas will be designated for standing room only.

The railroad crossings at Holland St., McAlpine St., and Lee St. in Navasota will also be closed from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The railroad crossings at Dixon St., Washington Ave., Blackshear St., Business 6, Courtney Rd., and Johnson St. will continue with regular operations during the day and close during the procession.

Campus Operations

The Bryan-College Station campuses of Texas A&M University, including RELLIS, will be entirely closed Thursday, Dec. 6, the day of interment, including the University Libraries. However, dining services will remain open. All non-essential personnel should avoid campus.

All campuses will reopen for normal operations Friday, Dec. 7. Therefore, there are no changes to the final exam schedule, which begins Friday.

Due to its proximity to the burial site, the Allen Building at Texas A&M will be closed to faculty, staff and students beginning Monday, Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. through Thursday, Dec. 6. The building will reopen on Friday, Dec. 7.

Blinn College locations in Bryan/College Station will also close on Thursday.

Public Schools

College Station ISD will release its students and employees early on Thursday, December 6.

Campuses for grades 5-12 (intermediate, middle and high schools) will be dismissed at noon, while elementary campuses will be dismissed at 12:45 p.m. CSISD employees will be released at 2 p.m.

Lunch will be served at all campuses prior to dismissal and bus routes will run according to the early-release schedule.

In addition, Kids Klub will operate on elementary and intermediate campuses beginning at early dismissal and ending at its regular time.

Information regarding after-school activities on Thursday, December 6, will be shared by the activity sponsor or coach.

Bryan ISD will also operate with an early release Thursday.

Elementary Schools including morning Pre-K will release at 11:35 a.m, Intermediate Schools release at 11:45 a.m., Middle Schools at 1:00 p.m., and High Schools at 12:55 p.m.

All Bryan ISD events planned after 5 p.m. on Thursday will continue as scheduled.

Navasota ISD will release students early on Thursday.

High Point Elementary will dismiss at 11:00 a.m. Brule Elementary and John C. Webb Elementary will both dismiss at 11:30 a.m. Navasota Jr. High, Navasota High School, and the NELC campuses will release at 12:00 noon. All normal evening activities will continue as scheduled.

Brazos Christian School will early release Thursday.

Grammar School (PreK-6th) will release at 11:45 a.m. Logic & Rhetoric Schools will let out at 12:10 p.m. There will be no lunch served. There will be no after care available. All activities hosted by Brazos Christian School between noon and 5:00 p.m. on Thursday will be cancelled.

St. Joseph Catholic School will close at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday.

There will be no after school care services. To allow families and employees the opportunity to view the procession, please make arrangements for your child to be picked up no later than 1:30 p.m.

The school said due to the complex scheduling and number of schools that are impacted by their high school basketball tournament, it is in the best interest of everyone involved that we proceed as regularly scheduled. This also includes the junior high basketball games at Allen Academy scheduled for 6 & 7 p.m.

Allen Academy will release early Thursday. There will be no lunch service, due to the 11:15 a.m. dismissal for all divisions. Extended Day has also been canceled for Thursday.

All Allen Academy events planned for after 5:00 p.m. on Thursday will continue as scheduled. Details regarding individual events will be communicated by the activity sponsor or coach.

IL Texas will release all students at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Vista College classes at 11 a.m. on Thursday will be canceled. Evening classes will go one as scheduled.

Other Closures
All state offices will be closed Wednesday December 5, as a Day of Mourning.

Brazos County offices will close early on Thursday December 6. Offices will close at noon to allow county employees the opportunity to pay their respects to President Bush. Citizens scheduled to appear in any of the Brazos County courts need to check with their assigned court to determine if they should still report. Those decisions will be made by each individual judge.

City of College Station offices and facilities will close at noon on Thursday December 6. The Planning & Zoning Commission has canceled its Thursday evening meeting. Payments or documents due to the municipal court on Thursday have a one-day extension and must be paid or submitted by 5:00 p.m. on Friday.

The Sanitation Department also plans to collect in the Southside area early Thursday morning from George Bush Drive to Holleman Drive and from Wellborn Road to Texas Avenue. Residents are asked to have their containers at the curb by 8 a.m.

Bush Library & Museum Hours

Tuesday, Dec. 4 - Thursday, Dec. 6
Museum and Research room closed.

Friday, Dec. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 8:
Museum hours 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is free.

Sunday, Dec. 9: Museum hours 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Normal hours and fees apply.

In lieu of flowers, the Bush family requests donations be made to the Bush School of Government and Public Service.
