Focus at Four: Medicare coverage deadlines extended for Harvey-affected counties

Do you or someone you love use Medicare for health coverage? Heads up: you have more time to sign up for your plans if your county received a disaster declaration from the state.

If you're in an affected county, you now have until December 31 to sign up for your plan--usually the deadline is December 7. Open enrollment begins October 15.

"That's when Medicare beneficiaries can make a change to their plans, Medicare part D," said Jeff Norrid, owner of Senior Assurance, a brokerage company that specializes in Medicare coverage. "This gives us a little more time to help people that need this service, and it is a tremendous service to a lot of people."

"For some of these people affected by Harvey, the last thing they're worried about right now is their insurance," Norrid said.

Affected counties in the Brazos Valley include Brazos, Grimes, Leon, Madison, Walker, Waller, Washington, and Burleson. For a full list see Governor Greg Abbott's website in the Related Links.
