Focus at Four: Real estate's 'dead December' may be the right time to buy

Thinking about buying a home but don't want to deal with the stress right around the holidays? Neither does anyone else.

That's exactly why it might be the best time to buy a new house.

December is considered a real estate dead period, but experts say there are a lot of sellers very motivated to sell before the new year. Plus, with less buyer competition on the market, the seller may be willing to settle for a lower price.

Coldwell Banker AG-TOWN Realtors' longtime BCS realtor Cherry Ruffino says this December trend holds true, even in the hot real estate market of Bryan-College Station.

"I think we can safely say that homes sell for maybe 10 percent less [during this time], historically," said Ruffino. "And there are more homes on the market now that there usually is this time of year."
