BRYAN, Tex. (KBTX) - Nurses from across the state were in Bryan this week getting some special training.
Texas A&M’s College of Nursing partnered with Brazos County District Attorney’s Office to offer training for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) or Forensic Nurses.
Sixteen students participated in a two-day course where they learned about courtroom demeanor and what it’s like to be cross-examined.
The nurses took the stand and practiced different scenarios with prosecutors.
Some of the nurses come from rural counties and will be the only SANE trained professional in their area.
Wanda Roark is a nurse practitioner in Limestone County. She says sexual assault patients in her area have to seek care in surrounding counties.
“It will be great for the community because as it is right now, it’s an hour one-way drive, ride with a police officer and back. Then they have to wait at a larger hospital once they get there for the SANE nurse to arrive."
