Historic Hearne building serving new purpose

HEARNE, Tex. (KBTX) Fried, baked and grilled food are just some of the things served at the Pony Express Bar and Grill in Hearne.

The restaurant opened in October 2018 but the building has been around for decades.

The owner, Andy Berlan, says when he was growing up the building served a whole different purpose.

“It served this area as a post office till the early 90s,” said Berlan.

It was built in 1941 and came with some major issues.

“The roof was leaking really bad. There was a lot of things that had to be done in this building to get it back up,” said Berlan.

Berlan says he and his wife took a leap of faith buying the place, but it was worth it.

“We really enjoyed making this place come back to life,” said Berlan.

The life-long resident says his goal is to see downtown Hearne shine.

“A lot of people go to Bryan-College Station, travel a good distance just to go get themselves a good meal, and have a good night out. We have it right here in downtown Hearne,” said Berlan

The restaurant will have live music February 14. Southern Groove will perform at 7 p.m.
