Here's why monetary donations are the best way to help feed the hungry

The annual KBTX Food for Families Food Drive benefiting the Brazos Valley Food Bank begins at 5 a.m. Wednesday and organizers say monetary donations can help feed more people.

The money can help the food bank buy exactly what's needed for specific demographics - like children or seniors. In fact, $1 can help distribute 6 pounds of food – the equivalent of 5 meals.

The food bank can also purchase discounted food from other non-profit organizations. Financial donations are also used to purchase produce from a variety of sources, including the Houston Food Bank, local grocery stores, and Collaborative for Fresh Produce in Austin - where they get it for $.10 a pound.
