COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX)- It took firefighters two hours to rescue a driver who was trapped in the wreckage of a semi-truck on Highway 6 in College Station. The truck's passenger was killed on the scene. She's been identified as 45-year-old Teresa Ann Schwertner-Lee.
The crash happened Friday just before 5:00 p.m. near the University Drive overpass.
The rescue operation forced the shutdown of both north and southbound lanes of Highway 6.
After the driver was freed, a medical helicopter was used for transport to an area hospital with severe injuries.
Police say the passenger was killed when a flatbed trailer it was hauling landed on top of the cab after it crashed into the median of the highway.
The driver was trying to avoid hitting another semi that lost a tire on the highway.
The 18-wheeler that had the tire separate from it continued to travel southbound on Highway 6.
Highway 6 southbound is closed to traffic until further notice. The College Station Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction Team and the Crime Scene Unit are on scene to assist with the investigation.
The public will be notified when the roadway is back open. Anyone with information pertaining to this accident is encouraged to contact the College Station Police Department at 979-764-3600.
