Is divorce contagious? CS family law attorney weighs in on new study

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX) - When a friend gets divorced, a new study shows, that could make you more likely to get a divorce.

The study from researchers at Harvard University, Brown University and University of California at San Diego suggests that if a close friend gets divorced, you are 75 percent more likely to get one as well. If it's a friend of a friend getting divorced, you are 33 percent more likely to also get divorced.

Jana Foreman of Foreman Family Law in College Station practices family law, dealing with divorce every day. She says she doesn't necessarily see these statistics in her day-to-day work with divorcing couples.

"I don't usually hear clients mention friends' divorces," said Foreman. "However, I do get referrals."

Foreman says, turn the statistics around and make a friend's divorce a positive for your own relationship.

"Look at your marriage and ask, how can I do better?" said Foreman.
