Krab Kingz staff donates tips to help provide scholarships for students

BRYAN, Tex. (KBTX)- Krab Kingz staff and customers help raise an estimated $3,000 for scholarships for six area high school students.

Checks were distributed to the students Friday at the restaurant's new location on Freedom Boulevard near Briarcrest Drive.

"I had to rely on scholarships, so I know the importance of scholarships," said owner ONeal Harlee.

The staff donated the tips they received from customers for nearly two weeks and Harlee matched that amount. The restaurant will continue to match that amount for the remainder of the student's time in college as long as they maintain a 2.0-grade average.

The students eligible for this year's scholarships had to be from the area and maintain a GPA of at least 2.5.

"I named this scholarship program after my mother who believed in me and helped me get my start in the restaurant business," said Harlee.

The recipients this year are:

Alexysea Merchant, College Station High School, attending Prairie View A&M.

Philip Barnett, Rudder High School, Prairie View A&M.

Lakeeta Jones, Rudder High School, Prairie View A&M.

Alisha Wallace, Rudder High School, Prairie View A&M.

Deterious Bryant, Bryan High School, Trinity Valley Community College

Kelexia Thompson, Texas Southern University
