Local business being affected by spoofing scam

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX) - Since Monday, Visiting Angels in College Station has been dealing with a scam we’ve all seen before, spoofing.

Claudia Massie, Director of Patient Care for Visiting Angels says their phone number has been hijacked.

"It shows up as Visiting Angels on their caller ID. They pick it up and then they either hang up on them or they start asking them questions,” said Massie.

Massie says they’ve received dozens of calls this week.

"Folks were calling and asking, 'Did you call? Did you mean to call? I just got a missed number,'” said Massie.

She says the person using their number is selling insurance, something Visiting Angels does not offer. Massie says her business almost never makes cold calls, and when they do, it’s for something very specific.

"Just don't give any private information out. If it is a reputable company calling, nine times out of ten they are going to have your information,” said Massie.
