Local farmer talks growing hemp in Texas

BURLESON, Tex. (KBTX)- Monday, Governor Abbott signed a bill into law that allows Texas farmers to grow hemp, a strain of the cannabis sativa plant.

Local farmers like Jay Wilder with J&J Cattle Co. in Burleson County are doing their research on the plant.

"Primarily what I've heard about hemp is the CBD oil which can be used for medicinal purposes and a wide variety of things but there's also value in other parts of the plant to agriculture,” said Wilder.

Wilder says his family has been in the business for years and primarily grew cotton.

"We've diversified into the grain sorghum and the wheat and corn,” said Wilder.

Although he’s not sure whether hemp will be a fit for his farm he believes it could benefit farmers in the area.

"It gives us another tool, or an option to diversify our farm even more,” said Wilder.
