MADISONVILLE, Tex. (KBTX)- No injuries were reported after a fire broke out in a Madisonville backyard Wednesday afternoon, burning up one family’s backyard.
Next door neighbor Chris Thomas says he came home on his lunch break, and that is when he noticed the fire.
"We pulled in the driveway, and I saw flames,” Thomas says, “Then I got out and I looked, and the flames were actually over the neighbor’s house.”
Thomas says he ran next door and noticed the flames began burning the carport and were inching closer to his neighbor’s house.
"I knew there were the kids in there, so I went over there and knocked anyways,” Thomas said, “and they were there and I told them to come over and get out of the way.”
Javier Ceballos and his younger brother were inside when Thomas came to grab them. Ceballos says they were watching videos online and had no idea the fire was just feet away.
"We hurried to get out, and go to our neighbor's yard,” said Ceballos, “I was scared it was going to catch the trailer on fire.”
Madisonville Fire Department responded to the scene, and say they believe the fire was caused by a controlled burn that got out of control.
Thomas says he just feels lucky he was in the right place at the right time.
