Man arrested stealing copper from BTU power plant

BRYAN, Tex. (KBTX) - Bryan Police say they caught a man trying to steal copper from a power plant early Tuesday morning.

Officers were called out to BTU's Atkins Power Plant around 2:00 a.m. for a theft in progress.

Authorities say 46-year-old Elijah Bass jumped a barbed wire fence and was throwing spools of copper back over the fence.

The power company says the total value was about $1,500. According to police, Bass attempted to hide under a car but was eventually taken into custody.

Bass is charged with copper theft, evading arrest, criminal trespass, and using a criminal instrument. He's been arrested 69 times since 1992.
