Murder victim's mother files wrongful death lawsuit against killer

BRYAN, Tex. (KBTX) On March 6, a Brazos County Judge ruled that Danny Diaz is responsible for the wrongful death of Vanessa Gonzales in a civil lawsuit.

In May 2015, Diaz killed Gonzalez, who he had an on-and-off relationship with. On the same day, he killed also killed his daughter's aunt, Ashley Garcia.

In 2017, the killer pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two life sentences in prison.

Vanessa's mother, Caroline Contreras filed a civil lawsuit against Diaz for the wrongful death of her daughter. The same Brazos County Judge who sentenced Diaz ruled the suit in favor of Contreras.

Diaz has little to no money or assets to repay the Contreras family for his crimes.

"It angers me because he gets to see his kids grow up and he'll get to see his mother age," Contreras says.

She also mentioned that Diaz took medication to escape reality and that she wishes she could make him understand the gravity of what he did to her daughter.

"This was someone you said you loved. This was someone you said you'd protect, and look what you've done. The worst of the worst," she said.

Contreras is relieved that things have come to an end from a legal standpoint, but she struggles to move on from what happened to her only child. Now, her daily blessing is her granddaughter who carries on her mother's legacy.

"She looks just like her mother... so there's still a part of her with me and for that, I'm able to keep going," she said.

Diaz, 33, continues to serve his life sentences. According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, he will be eligible for parole in 2054.
