Neighbor shoots Mexia man after barbecue pit argument
A man is in custody and his neighbor is hospitalized after an argument over a barbecue pit led to a shooting in Mexia Friday afternoon.
Police responded to the Parkview Regional Hospital at 3:28 p.m. in reference to a gunshot victim.
Officers said the victim, 62-year-old Leon Harper, was shot in the stomach.
Harper told officers he had been shot by his neighbor, 49-year-old Henry Sims, while the two were arguing over a barbecue pit.
Harper was later flown to a Waco hospital.
Officers then went to the scene in the 300 block of South Herman Street and arrested Sims.
Police said the gun was located and collected as evidence.
Sims was later transported to the Limestone County Jail.
He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and tamper/fabricate physical evidence with intent to impair.
