OCTOBER 11th, 2017 -- Ophelia officially strengthened into a hurricane in the far, Eastern Atlantic Wednesday evening.
After maintaining tropical storm status for several days, the National Hurricane Center officially upgraded Ophelia after satellite measurements of 75mph winds were recorded.
A slow northeast drift is expected Wednesday night and Thursday, followed by an acceleration to the east / northeast. Some further strengthening is possible over the next two days. Hurricane force winds extend 25 miles out from the center, tropical storm force winds extend 70 miles out.
While this is not an impact for the United States, Ophelia could make landfall as a tropical storm along the west coast of Ireland Monday.
