Texas A&M combat veteran gets surprise help for flooded home

BRYAN, Tex. (KBTX) - Local real estate professionals came together to look at ways to help veterans with home ownership.

Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation's American Warrior Initiative sponsored the luncheon at First Baptist Church in Bryan. Former Army Ranger, Purple Heart Recipient and New York Time's Best Selling Author Sean Parnell was the keynote speaker.

Organizers also had a surprise for Army Veteran and Texas A&M Student Kevin Jensen. They presented he and his wife more than $20,000 to make repairs to their flood damaged home near Hempstead. They had to do repairs themselves after problems with insurance.

"It was very overwhelming. I thought I was just going to come up here and represent the veterans at Texas A&M," said Jensen.

"He had to vacate the house and he's been slowly trying to rebuild and we just wanted to stand behind him today and back him up," said Matt Wood, Area Manager for Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation.

Jensen is also a Purple Heart recipient. He was injured in combat in Afghanistan and saved a fellow soldier's life after their Humvee was hit by an improvised explosive device.

That soldier, Captain Sam Brown surprised him at the event Thursday.
