COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX) - The City of College Station is implementing new changes to the flow of traffic on Northgate. In an effort to keep bar-goers safe Boyett Street to Patricia Street will be shut down from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.
"We work closely with our police department who are up there every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night, and they saw a real challenge with the way students are behaving and they congregate there on the corner of University and Boyett," said Debbie Eller, with the City of College Station.
"The street right there gets really chaotic at night and with the pedestrian getting hit a few years ago I think it's a good idea. A lot of people Uber up here anyway, so it shouldn't affect our business," Cody West, the manager at The Backyard.
On Thursday night, city council also voted to remove parking on Boyett street during the same time frame. They're also designating the first row of the Northgate Promenade Parking lot as an Uber pick up zone.
"We have a challenge with Uber and ride share companies. They tend to want to drop people off and pick passengers up in that little food mart parking lot, which causes a big problem when you have a lot of pedestrians accumulating there and being in the middle of the street," said Eller.
The changes are currently scheduled to go into affect on August 9th.
