COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX) - The United States Postal Service is opening up sales for a commemorative forever stamp saluting president George H.W Bush on what would have been his 95th birthday. This is just a small way to honor the president and making sure his legacy lives on.
It is especially fitting because President Bush knew the power of a handwritten letter. He wrote thousands of them to family and friends throughout his life.
"Anything that can advance his legacy is a great thing for this country. We need to remember him and the values for which he stood," said College Station resident Elvin Smith.
Smith is just one of the dozens of people who lined up to get their hands on the new forever stamps of President George H.W. Bush.
"Even though we look at the 41st president and everything he did throughout that time, his whole career was rooted in public service," said Bush School graduate Jennifer Peak.
Young and old admirers bought the memento with plans to keep it in the family for years to come.
"It's a day in history and it's something my children can possess for years to come," Smith said.
"I want them for my grandchildren so they can remember," George Johnson added.
Johnson says he shared a connection with the 41st president
providing security while with the Georgia State Patrol years ago during a presidential visit.
"I have on my wall, an autographed picture of me and President Bush," Johnson added. “George Bush made a great contribution to this country."
The stamp serves as a keepsake and a way to honor the president they say left a lasting impact on this country.
President Bush's grandson, Pierce spoke at the ceremony saying even though his "Gampy" sometimes struggled to articulate how he felt through spoken word, his letters had the unique ability to lift others up and his notes were always filled with love and humor.
