Young child run over and killed in Brazos County

BRAZOS COUNTY, Tex. (KBTX) - A local family is grieving after their child was killed in a tragic accident Thursday morning at Still Creek Ranch.

A toddler died when they were accidentally run over by a parent's vehicle. It happened in the 6100 block of Hearne Road near Kurten.

The Brazos County Sheriff's Office said a 2-year-old boy died in the accident.

"This is really a tough one. Probably one of the tougher ones I've had to respond to in my six years with the sheriff's office," said Chief Deputy James Stewart of the Brazos County Sheriff's Office.

He said deputies responded in a matter of minutes, but the boy couldn't be saved. An air ambulance from Bryan was initially called, but cancelled.

"It became obvious that there was no need for that. We cancelled that. But we were prepared. We had a landing site set aside for them. We were prepared to escort them in," he said.

"We're going to reconstruct the timeline and the chain of events that occurred here. Both prior to the child being struck and after that. DPS will be providing a tool for us so we can use to reconstruct the scene so it's what we call an ongoing investigation at this point," said Stewart.

Investigators were interviewing the family Thursday afternoon.

Still Creek Ranch confirmed the parents are staff members but the accident didn't happen at the home the family lives in.

Stewart said this is the third case he's covered of a child being killed by a car in recent years.

"All 3 cases, they were small children," he said.

"Don’t drive your car anywhere unless you know exactly where that small child is, you know? You never know where they’re going to end up," suggested Stewart.

"It's probably one of the worst things you can imagine and I don't know how a parent ever gets over that," he said.

Right now it's unclear how this accident exactly happened. We will keep you posted on the investigation.

Still Creek Ranch's Executive Director, James Inmon sent KBTX this statement:

"This morning at Still Creek, an incident occurred that affected a staff family and other ranch staff. A staff member's son died tragically in an accident at the ranch. This is an isolated incident, and no resident children were among those involved at the scene. Pastoral care has been contacted, and friends and family of our staff member are on site. As more information is released from the family and investigators, we will share this and pending services. We appreciate the community's support and prayers during this difficult time."
