COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M men’s tennis junior Valentin Vacherot was named the SEC Player of the Week by the league office Wednesday morning. Vacherot helped the Aggies win their ninth straight match including victories over No. 1 Ohio State, No. 20 Tennessee and Georgia.
“Val has worked really hard on his game and his fitness as well,’ Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. “He is becoming a much better all court player and that is paying big dividends for him right now. We are very proud of his progress.”
Vacherot, a Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France native, earned a trio of crucial singles victories to help A&M improve to 4-0 in SEC matches this spring. The junior bounced back from dropping the first set in two matches to win and help the Aggies win their 18th straight SEC regular season match and upset undefeated and top-ranked Ohio State.
The three wins ran Vacherot’s win streak to six matches and improved his record to 13-5 this year and 7-3 in dual matches. In A&M’s win over Georgia, Vacherot evened the team score at two-all as he handed Georgia’s Trent Bryde his first straight set defeat of the year, marking the first match this spring that Bryde was not able to win at least one set. Against No. 1 Ohio State, Vacherot handed No. 81 Alex Kobelt his first loss of this spring, Kobelt was 11-0 entering Monday’s match.
South Carolina’s Daniel Rodrigues was named SEC Freshman of the Week.
Up next, A&M will hit the road for a double header in Baton Rouge against No. 24 LSU and New Orleans on Saturday, March 16.
